Swimming Pool Lights: Give Your Pool a Facelift

in Outdoor Lighting

First, add some accent plantings to the beds to create a relaxing atmosphere to the entire pool area. Depending on your climate zone try to pick plantings that are unique and will create focal points in the beds. Be careful not to plant anything that will grow too big, or conversely, won’t grow well on its own. Choose plants that will highlight the area rather than dominate it. Some examples of hardy plants that are perfect around a pool are yucca plants, day lilies, ornamental grasses and dwarf hollies. Avoid any plants that shed leaves in the fall as this will only add to spring clean up. It is also important to space the plants accordingly so they don’t grow on top of one another as they mature, and so they highlight the proper areas. Adding some swimming pool lights that highlight accent plants adds a great touch once the sun sets.

Swimming Pool LightsConsider adding natural walls around the pool area to create a sense of privacy while maintaining the outside feeling. Many pool owners will use a tall solid fence to create privacy around the pool, but a good alternative is to use plantings to create a natural barrier between the pool area and the outside world. A simple way to accomplish this is to use open fencing such as split rail or wrought iron. By planting some tall growing plants on the outside portion of the fence you can create a sense of privacy, while letting the beauty of the great outdoors frame the entire pool area. Arborvitae, blue spruce and hemlock are just a few examples of tight growing evergreens that would make a perfect natural fence. Once again it is best to avoid any plants that shed their leaves to avoid any added maintenance.

Pay attention to your hardscape. The term “hardscape or hardscaping” refers to the permanent and often installed pool landscaping features. It often refers to the patios, decking and walkways of your yard. Try adding garden beds around the decking and walkway to soften the hardscape. To limit the amount of debris that can find its way into the pool’s water, avoid using organic mulch in these beds. Instead, use pebbles, river rock or small stone which will stay in place and help prevent weeds, There are a number of different choices of hardscape materials and you should pick one that will best integrate with the pool and pool deck.
