Solar lights are a relatively new addition to the garden decor market, replacing cumbersome wired lighting. A solar yard light contains a solar panel that charges an internal battery, meaning that they require little in the way of set up preparations.
The technology isn’t perfect, however, and many budget models are underpowered, leading to a dim silhouette effect in full darkness; this is fine for outlining a flowerbed, terrace or stairway, but won’t help you much if you happen to drop your keys. Quality models can offer lighting comparable to wired lighting for higher priority areas.
When considering where to use yard lighting, consider the mood you want to create, and whether you are going for a dramatic artistic look or merely utility. If you are after an artsy presentation, consider lighting windows and doorways as well as any yard art you may have.
Solar lighting has also found its way into gardening water fixtures as a safer alternative to wired lighting. Specially made fountain sculptures with solar LED lighting is the industry standard.
Budget models may still sometimes use filament light bulbs with solar yard lights, but you will want to purchase LED units where possible. LED lighting puts out more light at a lower energy cost, making for a more efficient device overall.
Durability is also an important consideration. Flimsy plastic budget models in high traffic areas, where they are at risk of being kicked or stepped on, are likely to be shattered, particularly if the temperature drops below zero. Look for better constructed metal or ceramic units for high traffic areas to protect your investment.
One unlikely use for solar yard lights is an alternative to emergency candles. In the event of a power outage, all you have to do is step outside and uproot a yard lamp, which has the added benefit of not being a fire hazard like a candle is.
