There are several limitations to outdoor solar lighting that is preventing it from really taking off. Nonetheless, with the advancement in recent technology solar lights are showing much more promise and are the way of the future in outdoor lighting solutions. The first concern is in the efficiency of the solar cells and its ability to capture and covert a large enough percentage of the sun light to charge the battery for the following night. Then there is the durability and brightness of the lamps themselves since the amount of power generated by the solar panels limits the amount of energy a bulb can consume.
But those limitations are clearly offset by the advantages such as the conservation of electricity used and the freedom from being wired to a power source. This means you can have the lights on all night without concern of increasing your electricity bill. This also means you do not have to dig up your yard to lay wires and there is no risk of having the wires tampered by critters or climate conditions. The freedom to install your solar lights does have its limitations and depends on the amount of sun light in the area.
One great improvement in solar light technology is the use of LED bulbs. These lamps burn a lot less hot and therefore require less energy. They often are not as bright as your traditional lamps that are wired to a grounded power source but higher end products can come close in comparison. LED solar lights make the most of the charge captured in the battery by minimizing the amount of energy used. In some instances where a brighter light is required, some spot lights or task lights can produce the equivalent of a 40 watt incandescent bulb. That is quite effective as a task light for many uses.
