Two Things Not To Do with Your LED Outdoor Accent Lighting

in Outdoor Lighting

Using LED outdoor accent lighting is a great way to beautify your home’s outdoor areas, but also minimize its effects on the environment.  You get all the benefits that you do with accent lighting, making your home more welcoming and beautiful, but LED lights consume only a fraction of the electricity that normal incandescent or even compact fluorescent bulbs do.  However, if you don’t install them right, these lights won’t be nearly as effective as they could be.  Here are a few common mistakes people make when designing their lighting and how to avoid them.

The first mistake that many people make is not concealing where their light fixtures are.  Having your light fixtures showing takes away from the object that you are trying to light and puts more emphasis on the fixtures than the light itself.  There are some light fixtures you might want to have showing, such as lamps that match your home’s style.  However, for accent lights you should keep them as well hidden as possible.  Decorative garden light fixtures work great for this because they disguise the light in it’s natural environment, whether it be in the form of a rock or some other object.

LED Outdoor Accent LightingA second mistake that many people make is choosing too many objects to try to light.  Lighting too many objects will just make your yard look tacky instead of sophisticated and risks the possibility of over lighting it.  While the natural instinct might be that more is better and you want to shine light on everything on your property, in landscape lighting, many times less is more.  Instead of trying to light everything on your landscape, pick a few very prominent fixtures and use them as the focal points.

Hopefully these two tips will help you to better install and understand how to use accent lighting.
