Common Mistakes in Landscape Lighting

in Landscape Lighting

So you got yourself a new house and you can’t wait to do the light fixtures yourself to save on money.  You get yourself a shovel and a couple of fixtures to set up the landscape lighting on your yard.  But before you get to installing outdoor lighting without a plan, you could save yourself time and potentially money by avoiding these common problems when setting up landscape lights.

Doing it yourself

Although there are some lighting plans which are simple enough to be done by yourself, elaborate lighting layouts will require the skillful hands of a professional.  If you want to achieve the effect you desire on your yard or garden, you may need to consult a professional landscape artist.

Lighting only one side of the walkway

This is one of the most common mistakes in outdoor lighting.  It is not suitable to light only one end and neglect the other so it is better to light both ends. LED landscape lighting can be great for this task.

Not lighting stares or areas with irregular surfaces

Inadequate or no lighting on areas with irregular surfaces like cobbled walkways or stairs can cause people to trip.  But lining up pathlights to cobbled walkways or stairs in a regular “airport runway” pattern can make them look bland and overly done.  Placing the pathlights at irregular intervals along your walkways and stairs on the other hand will create interesting patterns.

Using outdoor fixtures with weak light will not provide an ample amount of light to illuminate obstacles or highlight features.  Using those with strong light, on the other hand will only become distracting and, not to mention, energy consuming.

Not concealing light fixtures

Placing light fixture where everyone can see them can take away the magic from your landscape.  Unless they’re the decorative type, you may want to conceal the light fixtures in shrubbery or plants.

Not checking on the home line’s voltage

Where else can you wire your outdoor light fixtures?  You may also need to consult your electrician so you can make sure that your home line voltage can provide sufficient power to your outdoor lights.  You can also opt for low-voltage outdoor lighting since they do not consume a lot of power.

Underestimating solar lights

Although a lot of solar light does not give off enough light to illuminate obstacles, there are some that are powerful enough to light up your house’s exterior.  Plus, it saves you the trouble of wiring them to your home line’s voltage.  It does not consume power as well.
